My partner loves to make, and is very very good at making, chicken caesar salads. We regularly eat them as our main meal in the evenings. In my opinion, fresh crispy croutons are the ultimate finishing touch to a caesar salad, but sometimes maintaining a gluten free diet means we miss out on these.
Whilst gluten free croutons are available in the supermarkets, making them is really easy and far more cost effective.
I have experimented a lot with making gluten free croutons. Whilst they are super simple to make, they are just as easy to get wrong. After a number of fails, I’ve now perfected my quick and easy recipe.
My quick and easy gluten free air fryer croutons use only three ingredients and ready in the air fryer in less than 10 minutes. Use these crunchy gluten free croutons to top off a green salad or add to a bowl of soup to provide a gloriously-buttery texture.
Do I need to use an air fryer to make the croutons?
You could try making these in the oven at the same temperature as the directions below, I simply find the airfryer more convenient to use.
I have also tried making these in a frypan on a gas cooktop. The results were ok, but the croutons cooked unevenly and didn’t have the same crunch and will burn quickly.
My tips for making quick and easy gluten free air fryer croutons
- I used Woolworths Free From Gluten White Bread but you can any gluten free bread you have on hand, including crusts.
- Use unsalted butter. I have used salted butter and found that combined with the garlic salt, the saltiness of the croutons is simply too intense
- Do not coat the bread with the garlic butter mix until you are ready to cook them
- Keep a close eye on the croutons as they’re cooking – they will burn easily
- Ensure you give the croutons a shake after four minutes, this helps them to cook evenly
- Whilst you can store these croutons in an airtight container, they are best fresh. I suggest that you make these as needed.
